A flying boat crosses a bold red globe on a bright yellow ground in this 1938 poster for Qantas Empire Airways. The artist is not recorded. Qantas Empire Airways was formed in 1934 to fly the Australian end of the Empire air route with Britain's Imperial Airways, and 1938 was the year that route took to the water. On July 5, 1938, the first full flying boat service left Sydney for Southampton, operated jointly by the two airlines with Short C-class Empire flying boats, which would also keep Australia linked to Britain through the early years of the Second World War.
