A stylized Hawaiian chief in a feathered cloak and crested helmet stands out against a blazing orange ground in this Qantas poster for Hawaii. The artist and exact date are not recorded. Hawaii became part of the Qantas map on May 15, 1954, when a 60-passenger Lockheed Super Constellation left Sydney for San Francisco and Vancouver. The trip took about 30 flying hours with fuel stops in Fiji, Canton Island and Hawaii, and Qantas named it the Southern Cross Route in honor of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and the crew who first flew the Pacific in 1928.
