A woman holding a laurel wreath stands before the skyline of Reims as early flying machines circle overhead in this orange-toned poster for the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne. Held from 22 to 29 August 1909 on the plain of Bétheny just north of Reims, it was the world's first great international flying meet. Some 500,000 visitors came, among them French President Armand Fallières and David Lloyd George. Glenn Curtiss won the Gordon Bennett Trophy, Henri Farman set a distance record of 180 km, and Hubert Latham took the altitude prize.
