The ruins of the Roman Forum glow in the warm light of sunset in this poster by the French artist Georges Dorival (1879–1968), commissioned around 1920 by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railway. Its message was simple: reach Rome by way of the Mont-Cenis route. The PLM's line climbed through the French Alps to the Fréjus rail tunnel, opened in 1871 and often called the Mont-Cenis tunnel, giving travelers a direct rail link from Paris into Italy. Dorival, a prolific designer for the PLM, used soft golden tones to make the ancient columns and arches feel like the reward at the end of the journey.
