An airliner marked with a red bullseye cuts through a clean white field of abstract, geometric shapes in this early Sabena poster, dated to around 1930 and billed in English as "Belgian Air Line". The spare modernist design reflects the Art Deco era's enthusiasm for speed and machines. The artist is not recorded. Sabena was founded in 1923, and in the years around 1930 it was building a European network from Brussels while also pioneering the long route to the Belgian Congo, which became a regular scheduled service in the mid-1930s.
