A jewelled crown sits atop a shield quartered in blue, black, red and gold, crossed by a white saltire with a single star, over a scroll reading Royal Sabena. Sabena, the Belgian national airline, began operations in May 1923 and flew from Brussels for nearly eight decades; its name was an acronym of its French title, Societe Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aerienne. The airline ceased operations in November 2001, and its insignia have been collected ever since.
