Palms, bright flowers and a sweep of Mediterranean coast fill this poster for Sanremo by the Italian artist Vincenzo Alicandri, who designed travel posters for Italian railways and tourism promoters in the 1920s; one dealer dates his San Remo poster to around 1928. Sanremo sits on the stretch of Ligurian coast known as the Riviera dei Fiori, the Riviera of Flowers, famous for its flower growing and mild winters. Since the 19th century it had drawn European aristocrats and invalids seeking sunshine, and by the time of this poster its casino, promenades and grand hotels made it one of the smartest resorts on the Italian Riviera.
