The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway named its premier Chicago to Los Angeles train the Chief, and for decades it used Native American imagery to brand both the train and the Southwest it crossed. This sepia-toned design shows a chief in a full feathered headdress above the confident line "The Chief... is still chief," a reply to newer rivals on the route. A Santa Fe advertisement with the same slogan and a portrait of a chief in headdress, preserved in Duke University's Ad*Access collection, is dated 1954. The artist is not recorded.
