Small figures make their way along a mountain path under a pale green sky while an airliner passes overhead in this SAS poster for Japan. The quiet, layered landscape recalls the look of Japanese woodblock prints. The artist and date are not recorded. Japan was one of the great prizes of SAS's pioneering polar flying: in 1957 the airline opened a route from Copenhagen to Tokyo over the North Pole by way of Anchorage, dramatically shortening the journey from Europe to the Far East compared with the old southern routes.
