A navy pennant-shaped triangle carries the gold-winged SAS emblem, topped by the crowned shields of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, with "Scandinavian Airlines System" lettered below. The emblem told the airline's story: SAS was founded on 1 August 1946 as a partnership of the three countries' national airlines and began flying in September that year. In 1954 it became the first airline to fly a scheduled polar route, linking Copenhagen with Los Angeles over the Arctic.
