An airliner flies above a map of Scotland's islands in this vintage-style poster art for Scottish Airways, a reminder that for the people of Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles the airplane was a lifeline long before it was a luxury. This is a modern restoration-style design, and its original artist and date are not recorded. Scottish Airways was formed in 1937 and flew small de Havilland biplanes such as the Dragon Rapide to island communities across the north and west of Scotland. In 1947 it was absorbed into British European Airways, which carried on the island services.
