A large blue numeral 1 frames an SAA jet with its orange springbok tail on this roundel, announcing "Jo'burg 1800 hrs daily - from March 30" and "Terminal 1 Heathrow - from April 12." It was made to tell London passengers about a new departure time and a move of terminal. South African Airways was founded in 1934 from the assets of Union Airways and began its Springbok service to England in November 1945; its first Boeing 747s brought direct Johannesburg to London flights from 1971.
