This navy roundel lets the Southern Airways script speak for itself: a flowing golden S rises into a soaring gull, with "Airways" set in gold capitals below. The Atlanta-based carrier, founded in 1944 by Frank Hulse and Ike Jones, called itself the "Route of the Aristocrats" and grew from Beechcraft 18s and DC-3s into a jet airline flying the McDonnell Douglas DC-9. It merged with North Central Airlines on 1 July 1979 to create Republic Airlines.
