TEAL opened its trans-Tasman service in April 1940 with a weekly flying-boat run from Auckland to Sydney, making 130 crossings and carrying 1,460 passengers in its first year. Through the 1950s its flying boats also worked the island-hopping Coral Route to Fiji and Tahiti, before the airline switched to land planes in 1960. TEAL later became Air New Zealand.
