Of all the posters Stan Galli (1912-2009) made for United Air Lines, this one, a crew of paddlers driving an outrigger canoe through the surf with Diamond Head rising behind them, is often called his most iconic. Galli was born in San Francisco, trained there as a commercial artist, and after the war became one of United's go-to illustrators, producing bright, dynamic destination posters through the 1950s and early 1960s. He later designed more than 25 U.S. postage stamps. Here the sweep of the hull and the rhythm of the paddles carry the whole composition.
