The great spreading limbs and hanging roots of a banyan tree frame this 1950s United Air Lines poster for Hawaii, with a woman resting beneath its branches and the sky behind her ablaze with sunset color. The artist is not recorded. Banyans, with their massive canopies, were a familiar sight to visitors in Honolulu, and the warm palette here sells the islands as a place of slow, golden evenings. In the 1950s Hawaii was still a U.S. territory, and United, flying to Honolulu since the late 1940s, used posters like this to make the islands feel close to the mainland.
