A smiling woman draped in flower leis greets the viewer from a warm yellow ground in this United Air Lines poster for Hawaii, dated to about 1950. The artist is not recorded. The lei, a garland traditionally offered to arriving visitors, was the perfect emblem for an airline selling the islands as a welcome. Around 1950 United was flying the big double-deck Boeing 377 Stratocruiser to Honolulu, and the airline's Hawaii posters of the period, several now in the National Air and Space Museum's collection, leaned heavily on that image of aloha at the end of the flight.
