Issued in 1960, a year after Hawaii became the 50th state, this United Air Lines poster distills the islands into a single hula dancer caught mid-motion, drawn with clean outlines and smooth, sculptural curves against a soft lilac ground, her leafy skirt in tropical greens set off by bright yellow blossoms. The illustrator was not credited. United had been flying to Honolulu since the late 1940s, and through the 1950s and 1960s it ran one of the busiest poster programs in the industry, with Hawaii among its most frequently pictured destinations.
