Joseph Binder (1898-1972), the Vienna-trained designer who helped bring European modernism to American posters, made this New England design for United Air Lines in the 1950s. A white steeple and clock tower rise through trees in brown and gold autumn leaves against a clear blue sky, with a Mainliner passing behind; dealers have suggested the tower may be Dartmouth College's Baker Library. Binder taught at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1930s, settled in the United States, and once described the poster as contemporary civilization reduced to its simplest forms for instant communication.
