A blonde in white cat-eye sunglasses flashes a big smile against sunny yellow in this "Southern California" poster that Stan Galli (1912-2009) painted for United Air Lines in the 1950s. Behind her the poster's backdrop hints at palms, mountains and resort living, and a four-engine Mainliner, a DC-6 or DC-7, carries the airline's shield on its tail. Galli, a San Francisco native, was one of United's most prolific poster artists, and dealers note that his California beauty proved so popular that the airline reused versions of the image more than once.
