This vintage-style poster art for United Air Lines sells Southern California the way the airline's mid-century posters did: a woman relaxing beneath a sunshade, tall palms swaying overhead, and the white walls of an old Spanish mission behind her. Missions, bell towers and palm trees were favorite shorthand for the region in United's travel advertising of the 1950s and 1960s, when the airline's artists painted everything from the Santa Barbara Mission to San Diego's mission bells.
