This understated label sets United's red, white and blue shield, lettered UNITED AIR LINES, in the middle of a plain cream card framed by grey bands. United traces its roots to April 6, 1926, when Varney Air Lines pilot Leon Cuddeback flew a contract airmail run from Boise, Idaho, to Pasco, Washington. United Air Lines itself was formed in 1931 to manage a group of these early carriers, and the shield emblem was adopted in 1939. Airlines handed out stickers like this to passengers to put on their luggage.
