The seated statue of Abraham Lincoln looks out from between the great Doric columns of his memorial in this dark, dramatic United Air Lines poster for Washington, D.C., dated to the 1950s. The artist is not recorded. The Lincoln Memorial, designed by Henry Bacon with the statue by Daniel Chester French, was dedicated in 1922 and quickly became the capital's most moving monument. United used the memorial more than once in its Washington posters, treating the trip to the capital as a pilgrimage as much as a vacation.
