A cheerful cartoon toucan in sunglasses, dressed for a holiday, stands before a world globe on a bright blue ground in this 1950s poster by Francesc Petit for Varig, Brazil's leading international airline. The poster promoted Varig's luxury Super G Constellation service, flying overnight from New York to Rio de Janeiro and on down South America to Buenos Aires. Founded in 1927 as Viacao Aerea Rio-Grandense, Varig flew for nearly eight decades until 2006, and its playful mid-century advertising made Brazil look like the most fun destination on the map.
