An ox cart rolls through a sleeping Indian street washed in deep moonlit blue in this poster by the British artist Henry George Gawthorn. Dated to around 1920, it was issued through the India State Railways Bureau, which promoted travel to India from offices in New York, and a copy is held by the Library of Congress. Gawthorn was known for railway posters with strong, simple compositions, and here the cool night palette turns a quiet street into an invitation. It belongs to the early years of organized tourism to India.
