A Javanese dancer in ceremonial dress poses before an ancient temple in this 1930s poster, which promised travelers in Singapore that the island was "only 36 hours" away. It was issued by the Official Tourist Bureau in Batavia, today's Jakarta, which promoted the Dutch East Indies to visitors arriving by steamer from the Straits Settlements and beyond. The pairing of court dance and temple architecture sold Java as a place of living culture and deep history. The artist is not recorded.
