The pairing of names reflects two Northwest carriers: Empire Air Lines, founded in 1944 by Bert Zimmerly in Lewiston, Idaho, and Seattle-based West Coast Airlines, which acquired Empire in 1952. At the merger Empire flew a fleet of five DC-3s. Airlines handed out stickers like this to passengers to put on their luggage.
