The single word Western sits in black above a big red square cut by a white zigzag W, the graphic mark of Western's later years. In 1970 the airline introduced its 'Flying W' look, a large red W on an all-white fuselage. Western began on April 17, 1926, as Western Air Express, flying mail from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, and by the time it merged into Delta in 1987 it was the longest continuously operating airline in the United States.
