Steep cliffs close in on the river as tourist boats thread their way through the Yangtze Gorges in this travel poster, which names the British trading house Butterfield & Swire. In the interwar years the firm handled information and reservations for travelers heading up the river, and a closely related Butterfield & Swire poster inviting visitors to the gorges "in the heart of China" is dated to around 1934. The old spelling "Yangtse" on the poster reflects the romanization used at the time. The artist is not recorded.
