The Chrysler Building is located at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue and was designed by architect William Van Alen for the Chrysler Coropration. Construction began on September 19 1928 at a time when there was much competition to build the world's tallest skyscraper. So much so that in 99 Walter Chrysler took part in a race with the Bank of Manhattan Trust Company at 4 Wall Street to build the world's tallest skyscraper. The building was erected at a rate of 4 floors per week and the Chrysler building won the competition by raising a thin spire which was hidden in the foof thus making the Chrysler Building the world's tallest buidling upon its completion in 1930. It held this title for eleven months before being surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. The Chrysler Building also won the title of world's tallest brick building with approximately 3 000 white bricks a title it still holds today.

The Chrysler building has 77 floors 32 elevators and approximately 3 800 windows. It stands 1.047 feet to the top of the antenna/spire and has a radiating arched terraced crown made of stainless steel. Its decoration pays tribute to the automobile with the shaft and setbacks decorated with metal hubcaps and gargoyles in the form of radiator caps car fenders and hood ornaments. Its lobby is decorated in different marbles onyx and amber.

The architectural design of the Chrysler Building is Ar Deco and it is considered one of the last Art Deco Skyscrapers. It was designated as a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1978 and in 2007 it was ranked ninth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.
